In partnership with MONA FOMA we are pleased to exclusively showcase Ann O’aro from the island of Reunion, France, for a one off performance in Rosny Barn on January 21st.
Ann O’aro loves everything to do with the movement of the body, of rhythms, of the voice: “This is the main theme of my recording: between violence and combat, the body in a mess. I came from martial arts, before choosing Maloya to sing about intimate and taboo subjects.”
Ann performs stark and bluesy songs of rage and hope, tackling taboos and her personal history. Backed by simple percussion and trombone, she transforms the Maloya tradition: the music of the sugarcane fields worked by slaves on Réunion Island, a former French colony off the east African coast.
