Henrietta Manning: A Bite of the Apple
Do you remember when, or wonder why, Tassie was called the ‘Apple Isle’? Inspired by the old apple packing shed that is her studio, Huon Valley Artist Henrietta Manning has delved into the past and future of the apple industry. How many apples and the stories behind them do you know? Have you tasted a Geeveston Fanny? Did you go to the Apple Festivals or know an Apple Queen? Manning captures the clues that remain of a once huge industry; the remnant orchard stands, pickers huts and inside the great apple sheds. A recurring theme in Manning’s work is how we live with and build upon the past. This Series both documents and celebrates history while saving memories for the future.
In this exhibition the Artist combines painting from life with a technique that transfers printed material directly into gesso. Displayed with the artworks will be original tools of the trade along with the last Apple Festival 1964 ‘’Belle of the Ball’ dress, kindly loaned to the Artist by Mrs Bronwen Wedd.
