Lost Bedrooms: Jonny Scholes
Access to adequate, long-term dwellings is a growing issue around the world. Low interest rates, inter-generational wealth and generous tax settings have meant that over the last few decades the ownership of homes has consolidated. Meanwhile, technology companies have been busily turning access to these bedrooms into short-stay products, removing them from circulation within the communities of residents who need them.
Lost Bedrooms is a brutal tribute to the bedrooms that have been lost to short-term rental companies in greater nipaluna/Hobart. The artwork makes use of historical photos of bedrooms that were previously for lease, and destroys them as new bedrooms are taken off the long-term rental market in real time. A stark re-visualisation of the invisible destruction that has already taken place in our community.
